The hottest spots on the Island | Print |

Fuerteventura is the island with the hottest reputation. Fuerte is also one of the canary island with the hottest choice of places to sail. There are hundreds of breaks alone up the north shore, far too many to sail. The problems lye in the fact, that the wind line wanders on a daily basis i.e.: you can be at one beach with no wind, while Cottillo 1/2 hour away can be howling!!

Firstly in the north of the island you have all the famous breaks of Shooting Gallery, Harbour Wall, Flag Beach and of course Glass Beach. Over on the northwest coast you have the infamous Cotillo , where many a good sailor has trashed every piece of gear he owns in the famous closeall wave. Image
Its here at Cotillo
we will start our repart, 20 min.drive out of Corralejo to Lajares, then on to the new highway straight into Cotillo town. Turn left at the first restaurant and drive 500 metres up the dirt track and you’ll come to Cotillo cliff top. Its here where the best sailing is done, wind from the right (starboard), great for jumps and rides, waves vary from 1 metre. to 7 metres in the winter onths. Just park an top of main each cliff and walk down.
Watch the shoredump!!
Punta Blanca
is a small bay with clean faces near the rocks to the left, and jumpier waves to the right. Best suited to jumping and backside riding in cross-onshore wind.
ImageSotavento
If the rocks and waves are daunting you, you can always head south to the famous Sotavento.
Many a world record has fallen here when the world cup arrives in Juli. Winds offshore and fierce up to 9 Beaufort. Great for a blast on 4.I. Can generate wind blown chop to 2 metres.
Flag Beach
Now back to Corralejo town, and that must be recorded as the easiest and most sailed spots, Flag and Glass. Flag Beach is situated 5 min. out of Corralejo, and can be found by seeing the big hat on the beach directly in front of Lobos Island.
Windsurf Centre, top class kit, tuition and kitesurfing all go to make Flag the family venue.
Great beach - just park alongside the road and walk to the school.
In summer wind blows "port tack" from left, with a few reefs scattered outside. You can jump and learn to ride the waves.
Oh lord in the winter - Oct. onwards- we sail Flag with southeast storms, waves up to 3 metres and sails 4.7 often used!!
ImageGlass Beach

Carry on after Flag out of town. You
will pass the two hotels, just keep going and you will now venture into the dunes. As you come out an a right hand bend the road is right next to sea. This is "Glass", a verycrowded summer only venue.
Wind as Flag, but Glass gets world class waves up to mast high.
The reef to the left is the paint, but you can sail to the right with only small ratips. Again great for the family, as your car is nearby. You’ll always need a 5.2 or 5.4, but can be awesome.
Remember:
The final source of info is Corkys Bar - open nine years - with visiting sailors from Australia, Hawaii and of course U K. Apart from his sailing skill Corky is an expert at getting windsurfers drunk.

Oh well, another hard day in the office...
